Cultural Jamming, an intriguing phrase in my media literate vocabulary ;^), is a fascinating process of taking media (sometimes that already exist) and turning them on themselves. Grassroots artists and organizations often devise witty new media blips that mock their own media.
In my vocational life, I’ve observed some examples of these on the mobile phone, where mobile media unleash the power of cultural jamming to the grassroots individuals who believe that their little bit of jamming can help combat media domination. Here is one example of MeMe-based jamming on mobile wallpapers:
I’ve begun to see that cultural jamming does not necessarily have to be some sort of radical propaganda. In fact, any small piece of media mockery could be counted as a cultural jam. It occurred to me that I could be a cultural jammer by simply walking around with ringtones and wallpapers that express my personal attitude around the city. So here are some examples of my picks in the larger scheme of cultural jamming:
